Tango events or encounter, large or small, that made a special impression ...

Jun 23-27, 2004: The Boston Tango Festival. An amazing crowd of 400 participants considering that the event was not even publicized in earnest until 2 months earlier! Great performances, classes, Milongas, and even an asado (barbecue, Argentine style) and a Tango cruise. We hear they will have it again in June 2005. See www.bostontangofestival.com.

March 13, 2004: Festival of Tango Milonga in Buenos Aires. The largest (and free) outdoor Milonga in the world! Diagonal Norte near the obelisk in the microcenter of Buenos Aires was closed down and the party continued into the wee hours of the morning!

Dec 2003-Jan 2004: Visiting Buenos Aires. Always a special experience that must be experienced for oneself! Dancing till bright daylight at 6 am (mid-summer) almost every night, fantastic live music (like Los Reyes de Tango at the new and elegant Milonga El Cachafaz), planned and unplanned Tango performances (my favorite this time was just watching "El Pibe" Avellaneda and Geraldine Rojas dance at Porteño y Bailarin—not even officially a performance!).

5 Oct 2003: Tango Night at Plaza Garibaldi. It felt like a Tango show at Esquina Carlos Gardel and a Milonga at Torquato Tasso rolled into one! Plaza Garibaldi and the Tango Society of Boston collaborated on this one. Great dance music by Quinteto Mayor del Tango from Argentina and Uruguay, extraordinary Tango singer Nino Moran to keep the crowd spellbound, dance performances by world-class Argentine professionals Hector Falcon and Virginia Kelly, Tango dancing till 2 am, food and wine to accompany it all, and gracious emcees Vicky Magaletta (of the Tango Society of Boston) and Fernando Arrendondo (well-known Boston-area Tango radio personality) to present it all. Pure Buenos Aires feelingeven half the restaurant staff spoke only Spanish (but were extremely helpful and charming)! Can't wait for the regular Monday Milongas to start there!

27 Sep 2003: Dancing in Wisconsin. At the Milwaukee Milonga, hosted by Marek & Olivera. A relatively young but vibrant Tango community. Great music—much better than many more mature US Tango communities (with source material provided, I hear, by Milwaukee native and now Tango ex-pat Nina). And most of all, a very friendly crowd, including almost a dozen from Madison (where they will soon be starting their own Milonga). Thanks for the dances to Joelle, Trista, Nicole, Pam, Kimberly, Krista, Marilyn and co-host Olivera (sorry if I left anyone out!) and to the guys, including Roger, Steve, Dick, Tristan and co-host Marek, for sparing the ladies!
